I hate it when that happens

I suppose I should have taken my gut feeling/ premonition sense of something brooding a little more seriously...at this point I'm not even sure what I thought was going to happen...whatever it was has been replaced by the whirlwind that has been wrecking havoc with our lives!

CHANGE is in the wind:
Youngest child to college-with a job...oops-the employer forgot  $$$
Continent jumping
A sold house became 'unsold'
An old job got replaced with a new one-necessitating an out of state move
Taking a semester break to get solidly 'back in the saddle' is now a rodeo
Car buying in three days
Parenting a parent-like giving birth to a child you didn't know you were going to have
New job possibilities
Less than a month ago
I couldn't see what was coming-but knew that something was...I hate it when that happens.

Count your many blessings
Name them one by one
and it will surprise you what the Lord has done
Count your many blessings
Every doubt will fly
and you will be singing as the days go by
                                                               (Hymns pg. 241)
.....
I'm not there yet
but Thanks for the reminder

Change is in the Wind

It feels like the weather is changing...hmmm What's new about that?
No it really feels like the season is changing. Flocks of birds line the overhead wires and tops of trees, leaves seem to be showing up on the lawn (which is still crispy) and the temperature has dropped (a little).

Life is changing...hmmm What's new aboout that?
I think it really is..a life season is changing and I need to think about what that means.  Some of the signs are there and if I choose not to notice them someone always seems to point one out.
If rain falls I go inside or stand with the door open and watch.  I can't change it. I just feel what it's doing and wait to see the result.
No harm in that.

Tomorrow the sun will shine and I will see that too. And drink in the warmth if I can, if I'm ready.
I'm watching.
Hmmm What's new about that?

90 degrees seems alot cooler than it used to!

It is still too hot to spend much time outside. (As in more time than it takes to go from one air conditioned building to the next)  The temperature has dropped into the 90's with heat indeces hovering around 100. I am grateful that it is cooler less hot!
It would be nice to go fishing...in Alaska!

I promised some more photos of the mountains and am hoping that they will bring at least a mental breath of cool air with them. Thank goodness for air conditioning!
The first herd of elk we saw must have had at least 100 in it. It was near the summit in Rocky Mountain National Park. As we came out of the park there were other herds but not nearly so large-the elk were bigger but the numbers fewer!
These quilts were on display at the Art Museum on campus at BYU.
I didn't know we weren't suppose to take pictures-I even looked for some notification...so until I used a flash which had the unexpected result of producing an usher/security guard-I snapped a few. There were other quilts that were more notable in the display but I thought I was going to get a photo of all of them and wasn't really paying attention to the order I took the photos.
As you can see in this 'detail' photo, the applique and dimension to the quilt is from men's ties! It was quite clever.
'My, how you've grown since we were last at the condo' :)
A familiar phrase around there but this is just a little trick photography.
These aren't-he really is doing pull ups on the loft floor!

Down to the valley floor from the condo was sort of a temperature shock but as we climbed up into the Uintah's we all gave a collective sigh of relief...except Dad-he complained that we were freezing his ears off when we rolled down the windows!
This wasn't the lowest the temperature got on the way to the cabin but Mr. College Freshman chided me for taken pictures of the temperature :)
Who cares?-it's digital!
The week at the cabin begins!

From Sweatshirts to Sweat box

It was true...I couldn't take any more stuff with me...and somehow I guess we couldn't bring home any less! We dropped off stuff for one college student, picked up the stuff from another (there was a little bit of exchange there-but not much) one bike off the roof, another back on. We had to add in camping gear and food so we bought moving boxes to conserve space...who knew how much that would help! The amount of stuff we could pack in, I mean...not the amount of visibility!

We spent the first week getting the car repaired :) doing things on campus and then spent a couple of days at the condo with my dad and family. It was hectic but enjoyable.
We had a wonderful time at the cabin! It was great to have temperatures that barely made it into the '80's during the day and stayed below 60 at night.  Compare that to the heat wave at home and we were doubly blessed! The day we left for the cabin the temperature was close to 90 degrees in the valley but as we got to the higher altitudes the temperature kept dropping....we passed patches of snow along the sides of the road.

We celebrated a birthday,

 cleared land,

 played games,

 got dirty,

 went fishing,

 hiked,

went to the shooting range,

 got dirty,

 painted rocks,

 ate,
 played in the fire,

 took pictures,

 got sunburned (and dirty)...

the guys made a screen door to help keep bugs out of the cabin

We did indeed have more craft materials than could be used in a week!

More than enough to get dirty :)

We roasted hot dogs,

we played pioneer games,

we read the scriptures and prayed together.

We talked, we laughed and sometmes even cried a little.

We watched a slideshow of 'the good ole' days'  (that weren't really) and reminisced about who did what when...and tried to figure out who in the heck some of the people were in those slides!

4GB of photos later I have lots to choose from...

"Oh, ye mountains high,
where the clear blue sky
arches over the vales of the free.
Where the pure breezes blow
and the clear streamlets flow,
How I've longed to your bosom to flee!"
Hymnal page 34-'O Ye Mountains High'

(especially when it feels like 120 degrees here at home)

It did sort of feel like Zion...I can't think of much better than to be in a beautiful place surrounded by family!

I'll post more pictures as I sort through the virtual stack!

I can't take any more!

I mean it...there will not be room in our car for any of the college stuff we are hauling if I try to squeeze in one more game/activity/craft!
I now have an entire bin full of craft stuff to bring along with a box of projects! If the kids do all of these things they will never see the light of day! :) I am not plannng on bringing a lot of it home!
I hope it is as fun to make the things as it has been thinking about them!  :)

Family Reunion July 17-23, Uinta cabin- updated July 3rd

`Hello Family!
Contrary to popular belief- I have been thinking about the family reunion! Here is some of the information you have all been asking about. Please email me at whitneydupree@gmail.com if you have questions. Or you can post comments here, so everyone can see them.

Family Reunion: July 17-23, 2011

Arrival Times:
Mom and Dad: Utah:  July 15? Cabin: July 17, Sunday
Aerwyn and Jared: Utah: Always Cabin: July 17, Sunday
Gretchen and Jack: Utah: July 16, Saturday Cabin: July 17, Sunday
Whitney and Brett: Utah: July 16, Saturday Cabin: July 17, Sunday
Carrie and Darrin: Utah: July 11, Monday  Cabin: July 17, Sunday
It looks like everyone will be arriving at the cabin on Sunday, July 17 Plan on arriving around 2:30 or 3pm. Brett and I will be there to open the gate.

General Information:
The cabin is in the Uintas. It gets cool in the evening and can be warm in the day. The cabin is in a gated "cabin community" and it is closer to Evanston than to Salt Lake. Limited cell phone coverage. One cabin with two bathrooms, one shower/bath. Kitchen. Living/Dining Area. Upstairs with two bedrooms. Deck on front and back. Front deck is high, with no rail-please be aware of your children. Larger outdoor fire pit. Small swing. Space to roam, rocks, trees, dust and bugs. Shooting range. Stream for fishing (children only). Uintas short drive- hiking, fishing.   There are two ceiling fans upstairs - one on the north side and one on the south side.  You probably won't need more than that.  You turn them on and off with a cord than hangs down from them.
There is a washer and dryer.  It is a stack unit in the back bathroom.  Directions are posted on it.
The radio is an antique one in a console in the master bedroom.  It still works really well.  It also has an old fashioned record player, but we haven't been able to find needles for it.

Weather: High 80's and low 90's in the day, 40's and 50's at night (low humidity)

Meals: There are 30 people, including babies. We are planning on everyone cooking 2 meals (one breakfast/brunch, and one dinner).  Eeach family also needs to provide a lunch for everyone, but these are not necessarily going to be eaten together- more of a come and go when you are ready- type thing. Everyone is also responsible for some small, easily prepared breakfast items that anyone can easily make. You don't need to bring a ton of this, as we have breakfasts planned as one of the cooked meals.  There will be lunch items that you can prepare for your family at your leisure. Also, snacks and breakfast items will be available at any time so that you do not have to wait on someone to cook their meal. (ie, you get early, they get up late). However, we would like to have meals together as much as possible, especially the dinner meal. Please be aware there is limited fridge and freezer space. If you cook, you are in charge of cleanup of that meal. Each family must wash their own place settings. You may use paper, but you will have to haul out the trash. The dumpsters are about a 5 minute drive away.  I will bring dish soap, dishcloths, and scrubbies to wash dishes.

For families with special dietary needs/concerns: You are in charge of your needs. Please bring your own special milk, almond butter, whatever. I don't know of any life-threatening allergies (ie, peanut, etc) but let me know if there are any. We should have the meals plans posted, so if  one of your family cannot eat that, please come prepared with something else for that meal.

Shoe-la-la

Do you remember the "Old Hat, New Hat" story?  "Shoe-la-la" is a very girl oriented book written in the same vein.  It is cute and worth the couple of minutes it takes to read.

Wishing for a better Memory

That is, of course, literal: I have some great memories-but wish I had more :) !

I picked up a library book that someone else brought home and became thoroughly engaged in the story of Josh Foer's journey into the world of 'Mental Athletes'.  He is a journalist and was  covering a story about memory competitions. His interest was piqued and he got hooked into competing himself!
The book is written as his story-his journey through the competitions- but includes a lot of 'how-to' information along the way. He lays out a lot of info but leaves 'conclusions' to the reader in a light sometimes even humorous way.
The book is titled "Moonwalking with Einstein".

Family Reunion July 17-23, Uinta cabin

Hello Family! It is official! Our family reunion will be held this year- July 17-23. Brett's grandparents have generously let us use their cabin in the Uintas for the week. I know that a full week is not an option for some of us. Please leave a comment on this post to let everyone know what days you plan on being at the cabin. Thanks everyone! I am looking forward to seeing you all.
Love- Whitney

Memory Bank

Of the 2 or 3 youth books I read this week I would recommend :The Memory Bank" by Carolyn Coman. It is a poignant story about two young girls, sisters, who are neglected by their parents. It has a moral. The story is woven together by the idea of memories and dreams being sorted and archived.  The younger sister's story is mostly told through illustrations.  Check it out and let me know what you think!

Divine Signatures

I finished reading the book "Divine Signatures" by Gerald Lund last week. It was the book choice  for our book club this month(which I didn't attend). I am glad that I read it!  As a Relief Society Presidency we have been focusing on "Change of Heart" moments in our sisters lives, those moments that are defining moments in ones testimony of a gospel principle or knowledge of the reality of our Savior.  Lund's book is filled with stories of just such moments, scripturally and personally.  There are so many times that we see 'the hand of the Lord' moving in our lives. Those times are what Lund describes as events that are so singular in their obvious divine providence that it is as if God signed His name to them!  There are such occurences that we see more clearly in retrospect but these are the ones that clearly are indicative of God's love, power, knowledge of us individually and sometimes His intervention in what we are doing.
I recommend the book and recommend you keep a notebook handy to write down your personal experiences as they come to mind while you read! http://deseretbook.com/Divine-Signatures-Confirming-Hand-God-Gerald-N-Lund/i/5053780

Book Review

I just finished reading "The Inner Circle" by Brad Meltzer!  I suppose you would call it Historical Fiction or Dystopian...like 'Alas Babylon', written about the future stemming from current events. I found it a well written, engaging, thought provoking...'couldn't put it down' type.  It is worrisome and refreshing all in one.
Tell me what you think!

Bottled Surprises

Habanero Gold Jelly
Homemade Rootbeer
Pickled Eggs

Frustration
Ambition
Desire

We  preserve our tears in memories,
salting down the tender parts of life.
Why can't we bottle sunshine and friendship or laughter?
